In Japan, application of electronic technology to the automobile began with power train control and instrumentation, with its related fields. Recently, application of electronics technology in automobiles has expanded to include vehicle control and information and communication functions. I will present the current status of Japans' automobile electronics and trends for its future, which depend upon development of semiconductor devices specially. Development of automotive electronics in Japan reflected the development of semiconductor devices. Microcomputers have driven the evolution of automotive electronics in two ways. In the first, they made the configuration of delicate and highly capable management systems possible. Secondly, enriching product variety and ability was simplified by developing advanced, more powerful software, rather than hardware. The 1986 Toyota Soarer may be the typical model for the so called, 'electronics car'. It is equipped with 22 microcomputer chips and numerous semiconductor devices. This example indicates that microcomputers will form the foundation in developing automotive electronics.
