A wide range of LCDs have been for automotive applications. The most popular type is the conventioal Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays which does not have a very wide viewing angle and has a slow response time. Legibility of TN-LCDs is considered to be an important factor and can be improved by optimizing certain parameters such as dielectric anisotropy and the cell thickness, and the temperature dependence of the contrast ratio. The recent introduction of the STN liquid crystal display in automotive applications has shown it provides a better response time and a wider viewing angle than the conventional TN LCD. Better legibility is obtained.
