The full potential of a modern railway system cannot be realised unless an adequate signalling system is provided. Consequently, in order to keep pace with the development of heavy coal haulage over the rail lines of Central Queensland, and the increased tonnages on the North Coast Line of South Eastern Queensland, the older methods of safeworking and signalling on these lines were progressively replaced over the last decade by centralised traffic control systems which are among the most modern in the world. These systems were designed to stringent safety requirements but, in general, they were intended to operate only in a non electrified environment. The decision to change from the Diesel electric traction to electric traction, using single phase 25 kV a.c. power, and in particular, the adoption of a 25-0-25 kV auto transformer system, introduced problems in the immunisation of the signalling and safeworking systems.
