The computer programs described provide a tool to the power-electronic circuit designer for the rapid, optimum design of transformers and D.C. chokes, without magnetic expertise and judgemental decisions on the critical parameters of maximum flux density and current density, and without interpolation of graphical data on core loss. The programs eliminate the iteration of virtually complete designs for credible optimum design, when using a priori judgement on the critical parameters. A program run is completed in two minutes on a desk-top computer, permitting rapid evaluation of alternative core materials. A minimum weight, thermally limited design may be rapidly compared with a higher weight, higher efficiency design. Analysis of optimum design, and program logic are discussed. Typical design print-outs are presented. The computer solution of complex optimizing equations, for power electronic transformers and D.C. chokes, permits rapid optimum design by circuit designers without magnetic expertise, replacing the usual iterative, 'cut and try' approach. A program run is completed in two minutes on a desk-top computer, including instruction displays, data input, and design print-out. Programs have been validated by a large number and wide range of designs, confirmed by conventional analysis, fabrication, test, and application to operational spacecraft.
