Modern automotive engine control systems presently require pressure responsive transducers in circuitry for engine management. The measurement of inlet manifold vacuum pressure remains a relatively good indication of engine load. An analog-to-digital converter transforms the pressure sensor analogue signal into a digital control signal which is used by the system microprocessor, for example, to control fuel injection. Other examples of the use of pressure sensors in an automotive environment are for turbo boost control, altitude compensation and advanced braking systems. A number of designs of manifold pressure sensors have been used for this application including devices based on capacitive, inductive and potentiometric techniques, but some of the most widely used are silicon piezoresistive devices. This paper examines various approaches for improving the temperature compensation and performance of silicon piezoresistive pressure sensors.
