The ever increasing trend towards the use of more sophisticated control electronics in the automotive industry will produce many new applications for position sensors. The general automotive requirement for low cost will favour devices of a simple nature. The requirement for high reliability will favour the use of non-contacting or 'brushless' devices. The Screened Inductance Sensor qualifies under both requirements and has considerable potential for use in the automotive industry. The present paper has described at some length the design of a particular device with a linear transfer function and printed circuit windings. A variety of alternative devices have been described in earlier publications and the reader is referred to these for a more complete picture of the versatility of the INSEN system.
