Microcontrollers are becoming increasingly important in automotive applications; for performance in engine management, for safety on anti-lock braking and air bag systems; for comfort in air conditioning and infra-red locking. To provide cost effective solutions for the automobile industry it is important that a microcontroller is able to handle a great number of application oriented tasks, with a suitable number of an chip peripherals to perform these tasks. As a first step in designing a microcontroller for automotive applications Siemens carried out extensive market surveys and discussions with both the automobile manufacturers and their component suppliers. The results of these findings led to an initial specification for the SAB80515. This specification was shown again to manufacturers and suppliers for comment. The final specification which was adopted in the SAB80515 will be described in this paper. To show the capabilities of the SAB80515's peripheral functions, the control of the heating and air-conditioning in cars will be examined.
