Thus, it is already possible to have equipment configured to one or few off Railway applications over a wide range, using common equipment modules, without special hardware development. Other benefits stem from this approach, such as reduced stores holding and maintenance training being applicable to many functionally different equipments. There are now a number of different types of common bus highway available on the commercial market, such as VME, STD and so on, and it may become possible to specify hardware configurations that can met from competitive equipment ranges. It is already possible to specify database structures and VDU screen layouts so that the interface as seen by the user would be standard, regardless of supplier. Thus technical advance in both hardware and software can provide Railway electronic control and information systems with the flexibility for different installations, but without the risks of development.
