Automatic Train Control (ATC) is the term which describes a system comprising of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) plus Automatic Train . Operation (ATO). This paper will only discuss ATO, with its main emphasis on the reasons for using ATO; lessons learnt in the Hong Kong application, and guidelines for future applications. The paper is not intended to be any form of technical description on the propriety equipment used in Hong Kong, nor on any alternative equipments readily available in the market place. An appendix is provided to give a brief description of the Hong Kong System. The paper is intended to illustrate the management of system design in this field, particularly to show the close and iterative design arrangement between the signalling system design; the automatic train; and the track formation on which it runs.
