This paper describes two efforts to adapt numerical trajektory optimization of real-time use. A concrete application would be the automated guidance of future military aircraft. Two different approaches are taken to approximate the optimal control: 1. the 'direct approach' based on parametrization of the control functions and 2. the 'indirect approach' leading to a boundary value problem for the state and costate. One main objective of both methods is to reduce the computational effort compared to usual optimization programs. This is successfully accomplished by a simplified solution of the respective ODE-system. In this connection the collocation technique of method 2. is more general than the integration procedure combined with the 'direct approach', which is confined to a certain model of aircraft motion.
