The authors have developed a navigation system for automobiles that employs the locating signals broadcast by the NAVSTAR/GPS satellites. The system simultaneously detects signals from four satellites, enabling it to locate its host car's position to within 100 m at any point on the earth's surface. The system consists of a GPS receiver, an antenna, a controller, a CD-ROM, a 6' CRT display, a speed sensor and a dead-reckoning geomagnetic sensor. The car's position is indicated on a map on the display screen, enabling the driver to easily reach his destination even in unfamiliar areas.
