Like any technical system, 'Road Traffic' with its three areas 'Vehicle', 'Road' und 'Traffic' can be defined in terms of three basic functions: - Utilization of materials - Utilization of energy - Utilization of signals. These remarks are intended to illustrate with the aid of examples what potential improvements can be achieved by the use of electronics both in the part-areas and, by making use of interlinking effects, in overall terms. Whereas electronics are already used in many cases for intelligent process management in the production of raw materials, semi-finished products and components, there are further opportunities for coupling the utilization of materials and signals together by means of electronically controlled changes in specific material characteristics, for instance glass with variable optical or thermal properties, plastics with provision for specific changes in their characteristics or such devices as automatic dipping (anti-glare) mirrors.
