1976-1987, eleven years that have seen rapid development of the South African Transport Services (SATS) main line locomotive fleet sparked off by the 1973/74 oil crisis which resulted in a massive electrification programme on all major diesel-locomotive routes. During this period some 3313 route kilometres involving 6212 track kilometres were electrified. Since the introduction of the first thyristor controlled locomotive in 1976 the fleet of thyristor controlled locomotives has been expanded to include some 31 50 kV AC, 344 25 kV AC and 55 3 kV DC main line locomotives. These locomotives represent some 18 % of the 2373 main line electric locomotives in operation and account for 30 % of the total installed power. The AC fleet of locomotives employs phase angle controlled rectifier bridges with thyristor switched capacitor banks or the forced commutation system (LUB)2 for power factor control. The DC fleet use thyristor controlled choppers and have a fully rated blended rheostatic/regenerative electric braking system. All locomotives are narrow gauge (1067 mm) and have nose suspended DC traction motors varying in output between 500 and 720 kW.
