From 1980 to 1985 a new fail-safe intermittent ATC system has been introduced in Sweden, today covering 90 % of the Swedish traffic. The system helps the driver by giving him information and intervenes in case of danger. The investment costs exceed 400 MSEK and the annual costs are approximately 7 MSEK. The investment has been extremely profitable, because it was possible to take away the asistant driver, and as a general resignalling was avoided. But even disregarding these major costs, the investment has been profitable because of fewer train collisions and derailments but also because of reduced track and point maintenance. Because of the ATC system it is also possible to simplify tracks and optical signals meaning more savings of costs. The ATC as a basic component in the signalling system will facilitate many profitable future functions, for example, centralized systems using transponders for train position indication and radio for transmission.
