In an earlier paper, the author pointed out that the rate of unconfirmed removals has not decreased over the past 40 years; roughly half of all removals still test-out as satisfactory on the bench. The cost of these removals has risen dramatically with inflation. This paper directs attention to the critical role that the mechanical interface plays in the guarantee of reliable connector and 'black box' operations. Reliable interfacing between the mounting system and the electronics requires the careful attention of the mechanical design, the electronics engineer, and the thermal engineer; three varied disciplines. Furthermore, there is presently no singularly accepted technical specification (ARINC or MIL) that addresses this interface. Rather, it is governed by a mix of individual specs on airflow rates, hold-downs, connectors, etc. New packing concepts such as integral cooling and advanced built-in-test functions may reduce maintenance costs somewhat, but 'shotgun' maintenance will always exist and result in unnecessary removals.
