Computers have been primarily utilized as a tool for designing engines and little has been done in applying them to the test phase of the development cycle. Many current systems acquire and batch process test data, but few acquire, process, analyze, display, and store data during the test. Computer Automated Testing (CAT) is a discipline of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). C. Schiano has been involved with real-time computer aided testing since the late 1960's, and has developed integrated computer systems for in-house requirements, the U.S. government, and both national and foreign private industry. Systems have been developed for aircraft/engine evaluation testing, uninstalled sea level and altitude chamber testing, and production testing. Systems designed have been supportive of both Military and Commercial engines. This paper will discuss various requirements for realtime testing, data acquisition and transmission schemes, and various hardware/software data processing system architectures.
