The Defense Mapping Agency's (DMA) Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) provides a comprehensive topographic data base that can be used for a variety of applications. This data base is an extremely valuable aid in simulating and analyzing aircraft and radars low-level penetration operation. It is useful both as a truth model for the terrain surface and as sensory input of onboard terrain data bases for fusion with other sensors. This paper examines the use of Level 1 DTED data for modeling terrain following radar and its effects on the flight path. In addition, the utility of DTED as an aid to the radar is demonstrated.
