The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary results of two government sponsored analyses which study the use of Ada as a higher order language (HOL) for electronic warfare (EW) systems. Traditional EW software was driven into assembly code and microcode implementations by real-time processing requirements. The increase of complexity of EW systems has forced the software designers to consider HOLs for EW embedded computers. In 1981, the EW Software Study (Reference 1) compared four HOLs in their applicability to EW computer systems. Of the four HOLs, Ada was highest in the rated features. However, at the time of the report, Ada compilers had not been implemented and questions existed about the ease of learning Ada. In early 1986, the two HOL EW Software Analysis contracts were let. These studies are investigating Ada for use in EW embedded computers. The objective of the program is to identify enhancements and deficiencies of Ada and Ada Programming Support Environments (APSEs) in their support of EW software requirements.
