The development of expert systems requires attention to knowledge acqusition, the process of extracting and translating an expert's heuristics into rules that become the heart of an expert system. The already difficult knowledge acquisition process is complicated when the expert system being developed will be required to assist a combat pilot in a futuristic operational environment. In this environment it is important to approach the knowledge acquisition process in a structured, auditable manner. One approach currently in use is SKAT, the Structured Knowledge Acquisition Techniques. Basic SKAT techniques include task analysis, process tracing, feedback mechanisms, structured interviews, and computer simulation. The efficient, consistent use of these techniques is monitored using an evaluation tool.
