As the challenges of modern air combat increase, the U.S. Air Force is examining new approaches to help minimize aircrew losses while strengthening combat capabilities. One approach being explored is the use of a robotic air vehicle (RAV). A RAV can perform such high risk missions as reconnaissance of heavily defended areas and threat suppression. Artificial Intelligence (AI), in particular expert systems technology, is being applied to demonstrate the viability of this concept in the laboratory. This paper describes the knowledge engineering process for the design and implementation of a piloting expert system for a robotic air vehicle. It highlights the techniques for acquiring the pertinent fighter pilot knowledge and the evolution of a knowledge representation strategy.
