The space for installation and the permissible weight available for the drive equipment are limited on vehicles. Therefore it is very important for the design to save space and weight as far as possible, and for intensive coolling to be provided in order to dissipate the losses. Particular significance for the stresses imposed on the track and the running properties is possessed by the unsprung and primarily sprung mass in the bogies. These masses can be reduced by minimizing the weight of the motor and the mechanical transmission, as well as by suspending these parts, as fas as possible, from the secondarily sprung body of the vehicle. A special problem with which the engineer designing a traction drive is confronted is the number of different electric supply systems employed by railways. They range from single-phase a.c. at 16 2/3 Hz; 15 kV or 50 Hz; 25 kV, right up to d.c. at 600 V for urban traffic and up to 3000 V for main lines. Since the voltage level is not high compared with the high power ratings of the vehicles, the load on the network has to be kept as low as possible, having regard to the voltage drops. Important in this respect are a high efficiency and, for single-phase networks, a reactive load as low as possible.
