RATP and SNCF will be commissioning in 1987 a new ATC/ATO and Maintenance assisting System. This system is featured by a thorough implementation of digital processes by microprocessors, the safety is carried by data itself instead of the hardware. To achieve this development and guarantee a safety level at least as good as the one up to now obtained with safe technologies, acompletely new method has been developed to validate communication systems, software and computers. Modularity and versatility of this system have obviously been given consideration from the beginning of the design. This large investment is aimed to make possible headways of 2 minutes (instead of 2 minutes 30 seconds) with more than 200 meters long trains on the heavily loaded line A of Paris RER system.
