COMSAT has developed and placed in service an expert system for configuring thrusters on orbiting INTELSAT V spacecraft. The expert system, Expert System ETTWARMUP, was developed by spacecraft engineers experienced in the design and operation of communications satellites but virtually void of experience in expert systems applications. Using NEURON DATA's expert system software shell NEXPERT operating on a Macintosh Plus personal computer, COMSAT in just a few weeks developed a system which successfully replaced a complex iterative process previously performed by the spacecraft operations staff. The expert system reduces the work load on the operations staff and avoids the potential for human error in a complex process. The experience gained in this development indicates that expert systems have the potential to play a significant role in the on-orbit operations of satellites.
