To be succcessful in the increasingly competitive automotive industry, Ford strives to improve its material restriction/standardization/selection processes to support the recycling of end-of-life vehicles and effectively reduce impacts to the environment while containing associated costs, improving product quality, and reducing time to market. A systematic way of managing material standards and substance use restrictions, identifying alternative materials, and establishing a knowledge database has been developed and implemented within Ford. This paper describes the processes along with related topics, effects on materials and component suppliers to Ford, possible implications on suppliers' material research and development programs, and anticipated benefits to Ford Motor Company. Collaborative effects are needed with suppliers, other OEMs, and consortia as well as governmental agencies to realize these advances within the global automotive industry. This paper comments on US automotive industry's efforts to have a common process for managing material restrictions/selection/recycling.
