The use of a line scanner for the online measurement of the temperature of automobile glass during bending, toughening and tempering is described. The scanner is linked to a computer which is used to visualise the data from the scanner. The basic feature of the scanner is an infrared contactless sensor. Although the scanner is fixed, the glass is usually moving which creates a 2D image of the glass temperature. By using time-resolved techniques, a 3D image of the temperature variation with time can be obtained. The placement of the scanner for various glass ovens (sag bending, press bending, box, roll forming) and production steps (quenching, windscreen lamination) is given. Also discussed are points of consideration for the installation (line-of-sight, cooling, air purge) and the particular advantages of using line scanners. With a closed loop control, the ovens can be used to the maximum output, and the instruments will assure the operator that the glass is being properly heated.
