New design and construction criteria in the automobile industry request improved adhesive properties for bonding of car windows. Requirements are high modulus, high position tack, high green strength and a high electrical resistance in case of integrated antennas. The adhesives in use are silicones, elastomers, polysulfides, MS-Polymers and polyurethanes, whereby polyurethanes are the most commonly used. In future, larger screens will be used and the stiffness of the car body may be dramatically decreased by reduced A and C-pillar dimensions. The loss of stiffness can be dramatically reduced by using the bonding technology of car windows, especially of front and rear screens with polyurethane adhesives. The mechanical and electrical properties of various adhesives are shown in a diagram. The new generation of direct glazing adhesives (high modulus, high position tack, high electrical resistance) was introduced into the market with the new Mercedes-Benz E-class.
