This paper will examine the usage models, WiFi correction of GNSS multipath effects, "time of view", and vehicle infrastructure, and WiFi access point infrastructure build out constraints on the use of WiFi positioning as an augmentation for automotive OEM GNSS receivers in urban canyon environments. Special emphasis is given to coverage constraints, dynamic effects, and evaluations of WiFi signal quality and availability in dense urban canyon settings. Of interest is the area of coverage and time in view of available WiFi access points in a typical urban canyon environment and how that affects the overall positioning solution. This paper covers 5 main topics: (1) Architecture of a WiFi augmented GNSS solution. (2) Application focus of current GNSS+WiFi positioning solutions. (3) Automotive WiFi positioning constraints. (4) Test rig setup. (5) Trial runs in Chicago's urban canyon.
