With the Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG, Mercedes-AMG is releasing an all-wheel-drive, high-performance compact car on the market in 2013, with a newly developed four-stroke engine producing an output of 265 kW. The NVH development of the AMG four-cylinder engine (M133) represents an exceptional challenge in terms of the conflicting aims of efficiency and high performance. In early planning and development stages for the engine, the NVH targets were pursued while taking the aforementioned trade-off into account. The omission of the balance shaft for reasons of packaging and weight represents a particular challenge. Extensive NVH verification was therefore conducted on the engine and in the vehicle at the beginning of the project by means of both simulations and tests. The powertrain of the new A-Class was designed specifically for the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Excellent torsional vibration decoupling means that provisions are made for both the high output of the engine and the high level of vibrational comfort expected of a premium sports car. High-frequency noise such as gear whine had to be kept to a minimum in view of the trade-off between torque requests and NVH comfort. The consistent use of noise insulation on the vehicle and an electrically actuated exhaust flap reduce the level of interior noise produced by the second engine order to a low level in comparison with the competition.
