Tailoring of a turbocharging system to the specific requirements of an entire engine with regard to fuel consumption, emissions and service life is today a key element of engine development. This was the motivation at Daimler to initiate in-house turbocharger component development as the "New Engine Generation" (HDEP) series was being developed. The first results of the in-house turbocharger development are demonstrated on the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution engine with a 14.81 displacement and a rated power of 377 KW which was launched for the commercial vehicle market beginning of 2013. With this new model, a fuel consumption reduction of 5% was achieved with the introduction of the new DD15MY2013. In this paper, the specific development steps from the basic concept up to the seriesproduction validation of this exhaust-gas turbocharger are described. The simulation method used, the design resulting from this and the functional validation processes will be also presented.
