Over the past decade, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has developed its HiMSEN engines to cover various horsepower categories of the market for medium speed diesel engines. Based on the experience accumulated, the company has now extended the HiMSEN engine family with the first high speed engine, the vee configuration H 17V. To avoid compromises between complexity and installation space - high speed engines often exhibit more complex solutions in order to achieve compact dimensional envelopes - the H 17V design features an optimised arrangement of engine components, which also benefits easy working on the engine. Via the latest CAE and accumulated test technologies based on development experiences so far, the H 17V can sufficiently satisfy the IMO Tier II emissions regulation using only mechanical fuel injection systems. As well as diesel versions, the H 17V will also be a base model for a common rail engine and a gas engine as environmental regulations become stricter. In the paper, the following points are discussed: (1) design concept; (2) design philosophy; (3) technical background; (4) fuel injection equipment; (5) intake port; (6) piston and atomizer; (7) design and verification; (8) block, crankshaft and conrod; (9) cylinder head and liner. To meet future environmental regulations, a HiMSEN gas engine and a HiMSEN engine with common rail fuel injection are under development, based on the H 17V diesel model, and will be launched in due time.
