This paper presents the experimental and numerical analysis for the performance capabilities of front-suspension systems for cargo trucks in the family of medium tactical vehicles. The front suspension of the current baseline family of medium tactical vehicles consists of a solid axle with leaf springs and shock absorbers. Six other types of suspension systems including semi-active and passive suspensions are evaluated in solid-axle and fully independent configurations. Extensive proving ground tests for on- and off-road conditions are conducted to evaluate the basic handling parameters and the braking maneuvers. Numerical analysis involves the case in which the baseline vehicle passes washout maximum potholes. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance capabilities of various suspension technologies which are being considered for the design of future family of medium tactical vehicles for mobility performance improvement.
