The new plug-in hybrid powertrain combines high performance and low fuel consumption using electrification of Volvo's 4 cylinder Drive-E powertrains. First out on the new platform is Volvo XC90 with the Drive-E powertrains high performance petrol engine and newly designed ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive). The combination of the supercharged engine and the Electric Rear Axle Drive provides an optimum of peak performance. The combustion engine is installed together with the standard 8 speed automatic transmission used in Drive-E powertrains. A CISG (Crank mounted Integrated Starter Generator) is fitted between engine and automatic transmission. The CISG is used as generator and starter and may also assist the engine with boost power depending on driving condition. Pure electric drive is provided with the Electric Rear Axle Drive. In this driving condition the automatic transmission is controlled to a neutral state using an electric oil pump that also provides lubrication when the combustion engine is not running. When extra power is needed the CISG ensures a seamless start of the engine. ERAD and CISG are electrically connected with a high voltage battery system. Electric AC, electric heater and DCDC for 12 V supply are also connected to the high voltage supply. The complete powertrain complies with Euro6 and TZEV emission requirements.
