In this paper the European research project AdaptIVe is introduced. AdaptIVe deals with the development of automated driving functions for different target areas and speed ranges. Besides to the functions development AdaptIVe also addresses general research questions on automated driving. In this context the research activities in the subprojects Response 4 and Evaluation are presented. Response 4 will provide a detailed scheme for categorizing automation functions. This scheme will aid in legal as was as technical assessments, e.g. validation of driving functions. An example for the distinction between on demand and continuous operating systems is outlined. While several issues will be covered within Response 4 the main focus will be on legal aspects for automated driving in SAE automation levels 3 and 4 to point out where changes in the legal framework will be needed to enable a fast market introduction of such functions. The evaluation is split in technical, in-traffic, user-related and impact assessment. For the technical assessment a proposed evaluation methodology has been described. The chosen approach divides the function according its operational time into event based and continuously operating function. For the event based functions the evaluation is conducted similar to the existing evaluation methods for safety-related ADAS functions. For the continuously operating function the approach deviates from the known evaluation approach and focuses on the evaluation in-traffic than on the testing in predefined test scenarios in order to cover as many different situations during the evaluation.
