The electrification of the powertrain is a technology with a huge potential to reduce the vehicle fuel consumption. The different types of electrification, from start-stop via 48 V and high voltage hybrids up to all electric vehicles have to be considered to fulfil the different mobility needs. The 48 V technology has a huge potential to become standard in a large number of vehicles, based on its good ratio between fuel saving and integration costs. 48 V belt driven starter generator systems consist of an electrical machine with integrated power electronics beside the components of the electrical power supply. As e-machine type induction machines can beneficially be applied due to their special properties and potentials. In this contribution these properties are described in detail - as the robust design, high performance capabilities, high drive dynamics and advantageous system aspects. Finally also promising commercial benefits can be stated. Based on a reference design of a typical induction machine for the described application, beneficial illustrations of the typical e-motor characteristics are introduced, including the impact of some design modifications as the variation of motor stack length and the application of a Cu die cast rotor (instead of Al die cast). Furthermore the compliance of the e-motor performance to the load cycle requests with the impact of a belt ratio variation can be shown.
