Alternative powertrains are more and more in the focus specifically in passenger cars. But in regards of growing transportation needs in cities for persons and for goods commercial vehicles will be an important part for alternative powertrain too. Due to the different segments and therefore variety of requirements a coexistence of different technologies will be found including as a main part the e-mobility. E-mobility will show as well many variations of technology concepts from parallel to serial hybrid up to pure battery vehicle in specific inner city applications. The article will describe some of the applications with high priority as city bus, long haulage and inner city truck. Main focus will be the city bus application. This application is already well established and in discussion for further roll out up to battery buses in the future. Coming from the state of the art hybrid bus with the MAN Lion´s City Hybrid Bus and the experiences made by that solution specific questions e.g. ultracaps, batteries and even combinations of both will be discussed. But today the main driver for implementation of e-mobility to realize higher volume is still the cost perspective in regards of TCO (total cost of ownership). Especially in the long haulage segment this will be the success factor of hybridization. The approach in the long haulage segment will be described and an outlook for future application will be given. Finally taking into account the possibility of cities regulating the access to inner city areas concepts like that one realized in the concept truck Metropolis can play an important rule. The concept of Metropolis will be shown and described. However in order to keep the development effort of all the different hybrid solutions in an affordable budget, it is necessary to develop a modular kit of hybrid components for the different applications with trying to realize synergy effects with the passenger car applications as a possibility to overcome the disadvantage of high R&D costs and low volumes.
