The change in the homologation procedures transitioning from NEDC to WLTP (World-wide Light-duty Test Procedure) will impact significantly the fuel economy potential of today's Stop & Start, losing half of its benefit. This work shows that by introducing sailing, fuel savings due S&S could be maintained and even improved over WLTP. The proposed strategy activating sailing automatically shows an enormous potential as it could be applied in real world as on cycle. Moreover, it allows a smart integration/management between sailing activation and DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut-Off) operation. The torque-based control approach proposed for the sailing logic is able to activate the feature in all driving conditions, without worsening of driving experience. A simulation tool has been developed, and validated on WLTP cycle through experimental results. The interesting fuel economy potential of sailing has then been numerically assessed both on regulatory schedules and on real world driving, by means of RDE cycles (Real Driving Emission). Experimental WLTP tests have also proven that the sailing logic here disclosed does not deteriorate diesel engine emissions. Furthermore, longer shut-off time helps maintaining higher temperature in the exhaust line compared to baseline configuration equipped only with conventional S&S. Such results is very important to avoid any risk for aftertreament system when applying engine off at vehicle in motion. Therefore, due to its potential both on cycle and in the real-world driving, it might be helpful to close the gap between publicized and real fuel consumption of vehicles, which corresponds today to a major complain by customers.
