This paper has showed that the topology optimization is an extremely useful tool for driving the design and enhancing the performance of the state-of-the-art portable machines as a contingency manufacturing tool for large parts. Portable machines are all weight-mass limited and the topology optimization help the designers place the limited mass in the right positions to maximize the performance figures of merit, as is the case with the static stiffness in this paper. Before an experimental assessment of the stiffness is performed, this paper has showed that, with a sensible and clearly marked problem definition, the use of commercial packages to perform topology optimization can render improvements in static stiffness of around 30% with mass reductions of 7% - 8% compared to a non-assisted fully-human design. This way, serial portable kinematic machines become competitive with respect to parallel kinematic portable machines, which is the dominant architecture for miniature and portable machine. This statement has been through FEM assessment and comparison for a given application where complete and thorough information was available.
