A major contribution of this paper is the development of a novel signal processing method to estimate the tyre-slip angle. The proposed sensor fusion approach ensures robust estimation performance even during vehicle manoeuvres which show highly nonlinear tyre characteristics. Next, an adaptive stability control algorithm based on this slip-angle information is developed. The control algorithm integrates Active Front Steering (AFS) and Direct Yaw Control (DYC) methods. The results analysed in Section 4 indicate that the controller can successfully intervene with the steering and braking mechanisms and stabilise the system during the given evasive lane change manoeuvre. Choosing the adaptation parameters as the tyre cornering stiffness, the algorithm is also capable of running on a lower friction surface condition. Another merit of this algorithm is that it eliminates the need for the lateral velocity variable, which would require a state estimator and would introduce more uncertainty into the system. The proposed system presumes that an intelligent tyre system is available on the vehicle, which for now limits its application area only to the research community; however, recent developments indicate that there will be such tyres on tracks in the very near future. Furthermore, the implementation strategy for the DYC command was not taken as a focus point in this study; however, it can be improved by considering a more advanced lower level control strategy. Nevertheless, the adaptive nature of the system allows it to perform reasonably well in unexpected situations such as the evasive manoeuvre tested in this study.
