Much research work has been done to improve the performance of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) maglev vehicles. However, it is still a long-term task to promote the practical application. In this study, we studied the positioning effects of iron plates which were added to the upper surface (vertical adding way) or lateral side surfaces (lateral adding way) of a bulk superconductor on the maglev performance. Experimental results show that the vertical adding way can bring significant improvement to the guidance force of the bulk sample at specific working position, but the lateral adding way has little effect. These phenomena are explained from the external magnetic field change and corresponding induced current density change inside the bulk superconductor after the addition of iron plates. This work is helpful to understand the performance improvement by introducing ferromagnetic materials to the onboard superconductors.
