Topic of this paper are the results of some investigations discovering potentials for improvements of two different injection molding machines with respect to the efficiency. During this investigations, the influence of process conditions on the energy consumption of two different driven injection molding machines have been focused. The first machine is a full hydraulic driven machine with a hydraulic accumulator which delivers the power for each axis and each cycle section. The second machine is an all-electric driven injection molding machine. Both machines are best practice and state of the art. Year of manufacturing for the first machine was 2012, the second machine was manufactured in 2011. During this investigation, the potential of different drive technologies will be illustrated. The next step is to compare both machine concepts with focus on process related energy consumptions and process control. Finally some recommendations will be done for an improvement of the efficiency of the machines. This paper should be an encouragement for manufacturer of injection molding machines for the construction of efficient drive concepts. Another purpose of this paper is to increase transparency of the machine technologies for the plastic processing industry.
