Modern wheel loaders are equipped with a variety of suspension systems to ensure high levels of vibration comfort and driving safety. These include suspended seats with multiple degrees of freedom, elastically mounted cabins or driving oscillation dampers. However, the appearance of the European Directive 2002/44/EG and their national implementations - which are primarily aimed at owners of mobile machinery - indirectly forces vehicle manufacturers to further reduce vibration levels acting on the operators of their vehicles. The process presented in this paper provides the ability for efficient analysis and holistic optimization of global vehicle behavior in the fields of vibration comfort, vehicle dynamics and tipping safety in early stages of the product development process. New concepts can be evaluated and the interaction of different subsystems optimized reducing the need for costly prototypes and unnecessary development loops. Since all virtual tests are completed with the same basic vehicle model, quantitative comparison of different approaches can be drawn to assist decisions for further development. By using full-vehicle simulation in combination with maneuver control and automated postprocessing, developers are liberated from repetitive and failure-prone work and able to focus on interpretation of results and optimizing machine behavior. The modular approach thereby allows new driving maneuvers, virtual tests and postprocessing routines as well as alternative vehicle models to be added with minimal effort.
