Apart from the technical qualifications a manufacturing technology has to prove its economic competitiveness. Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) is a technically advanced process whose industrialization progress highly depends on the capability to compete with other technologies concerning the costs. A cost model is developed based on an extensive process analysis to determine the manufacturing costs of AFP for thermoset carbon fiber reinforced plastic material. The cost model is verified experimentally by varying part geometries and complexities and through expert interviews. The verified model is used to investigate the cost distribution and its development for different scenarios. A sensitivity analysis shows the influence of single parameters on the layup time and the overall manufacturing costs. An AFP specific restriction is the slenderness of the ply geometry. Varying aspect ratios for given ply areas are analyzed in order to evaluate the process efficiency.
