Simulation has considerably reduced the time needed for hot engine testing. By determining and optimising procedures which still need to be performed on the test bed, AVL and MTU use design of experiment methodology to precisely tailor test strategies to the targeted data. Reductions in fuel consumed, emissions released into the atmosphere and expensive test bed occupancy result. A virtual engine, based on a realistic engine model, is used by MTU Friedrichshafen as a tool for the efficient optimisation of test methodology. The test and optimisation of the test strategy, as automated by CAMEO, can be thus transferred to an office environment and valuable fuel and test bed time can be saved. The following example shows how test bed time for the test program creation and validation was reduced by a double-digit percentage. Targets, the virtual test bed, optimizing test strategy and engine test bed validation are outlined. Apart from the additional knowledge gained, in trials this method saved approximately 50 hours of real test bed time with associated costs and emissions. By implementing the variation strategy with the highest success rating on the test bed, the test space for a full load point was significantly improved. Simultaneously, the time required for measuring this operating point was reduced by approximately 30 % compared to the conventional strategy. In the case of large engines, this equates to several hundred litres of fuel saved in hot engine testing. It has been demonstrated that a virtual test bed is constructive and useful when solving problems of this type.
