Aiming at the work requirements of cutting ship plate in the water, this paper studies and analyzes the characteristics of continuous abrasive water jet cutting in submerged condition. The software Fluent is used to establish the underwater environment cutting model. Comparative simulation with different supply pressures, submerged depths and concentrations of abrasive is carried out to analyze the performance of the abrasive water jet cutting. Results show that the abrasive water jet supply pressure, confining pressure, target distance and abrasive concentration are the main factors that influence the cutting efficiency of the underwater abrasive water jet. Abrasive water jet cutting capability decreases as confining pressure increases; however, it can be improved by increasing water supply pressure. It is also found that the abrasive concentration can not be too large, and the cutting target distance should be limited within 4.8mm in order to improve the cutting efficiency. The laboratory study, measuring the steel cutting depth as cutting performance indicators, shows the experimental result is consistent with simulation result, so the designed high-pressure abrasive cutting equipment meets the ship plate cutting requirements.
