Increasing off shore oil exploitation requires effort in the development of maritime technique, especially in submerged construction, maintenance and repair of oil platforms and pipelines. With abrasive water jets formed in a self-constructed abrasive cutting head we cut structural steel under water successfully. The corresponding cutting kerf quality was compared with that belonging to thermal methods like flame cutting, laser cutting and submerged plasma are cutting. First tests were performed to study the influence of pressure, abrasive flow rate and nozzle sample distance on the geometry of the cutting kerf in aluminium. At last the possibility of submerged cleaning and surface improvement by abrasive jets is considered.
