In a research cooperation project between IPEK - Institute of Product Engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the BMW AG development and validation environments (DVE) with the hybrid-powertrain as the system under development have been created based on the XiL (X- in-the-Loop-Approach). Depending on the physical or virtual representation of XiL-systems, four DVE-constellations could be derived, which are applicable during the whole development process. The basis for all DVEs is a simulation model which contains several topologies and operation strategies of hybrid vehicles in detail. For the first time, both aspects can be simulated and optimized parallelly in one model. Because of an appropriate interface definition between the driver, the hybrid-powertrain, the rest-vehicle and the environment, further XiL-compliant DVEs could be generated based on the simulation model. Part of them is a Hybrid-Experience-Prototype (HEP) for illustration of optimized topologies and operation strategies already in early development stages. Furthermore, several powertrain and complete vehicle test-benches at IPEK are operated using sections of the simulation model. Finally, the conventional road test could be integrated in the approach as the fourth DVE. The developed Hybrid-Powertrain-in-the-Loop environment unifies three essential attributes for a successful product development: Firstly, the whole development process is consequently adjusted to the customers' demands. Secondly, there is a continuous validation of the results in the form of a target/actual performance comparison. Thirdly, the validation is executed in simulation and based on prototypes, thus it is especially flexible and efficient. Currently, detailed investigations regarding issues of topology and operation strategy corresponding to the approach presented are put into action at IPEK in cooperation with the BMW AG with the overall goal to further improve the development quality of hybrid-powertrains and to quantify the time saving potentials in the development process.
