In this text a brief overview of how to determine loads acting on azimuthing thrusters in ice conditions is given. Ice load calculation for ship propulsion is considered important due to increasing commercial interest and activity in Arctic waters and ice conditions, like traffic through Northwest Passage. Commercial interest calls for optimized structural design, and for that purpose, reasonable understanding of structure expected loading is required. The relevant load scenarios for load estimation are introduced, followed by discussion how to determine ice loads related to different loading types. Ice block impact to thruster is dealt with an approach using impact kinetic energy as boundary for ice load. Thruster structural dynamics is induded in the presented mode! and an example application is shown. A finite element modelling based approach is used for evaluating thruster loading when ship is going astern through ice ridge, here is an application example shown. For rotating propeller and ice contact, a two-fold approach is used. For propeller cutting the ice, a review of contact models is presented, followed by current research efforts and current ice class rules. In addition to direct contact loads to propeller, the ice obstructing the flow to propeller can cause non-contact hydrodynamic loads. The nature of non-contact loads and load calculation example is presented.
