In modem cars the airbag system is an important part of the automotive passive safety. It is subject to strong requirements and can only unfold its protective effect if the crash is detected in time and correctly. During the last years, structure-borne sound based systems have become more and more important in addition to the well-known acceleration based crash detection. With this technology, an earlier detection and characterization of a crash scenario can be realized. The relevant structures for the acoustic emissions, in particular cross member and crash boxes, are evolving constantly. This results in a change of the acoustic signals. For analyzing the influence of thin-walled cylindric tubes symbolizing crash boxes on the acoustic emission during the buckling process, a miniaturised component test facility was constructed.
