We investigated how grain leather patterns influenced tactile sensations of leather car seat covers. Tactile sensations were evaluated by physical touch, and physical properties were measured as objective evaluations. The relationship between the tactile sensations of leather covers and the covers' physical properties was examined by correlation analysis and the principal component analysis. The results were as follows. (1) The grain leather patterns of leather car seat covers influenced the tactile sensations and their physical properties. (2) Samples with smaller undulations also had a smaller MIU/MMD, which indicated softness. (3) The cover patterns influenced the adjectives "bumpy" related to rough-smooth sensations, "soft" and "fluffy" related to hardsoft sensations, and "moist" related to wet-dry sensations, but did not influence "thick". (4) The tactile sensations of leather covers were evaluated by adjectives like "high-class" and "smoothness". The samples with small undulations were high-class and the samples with large undulations were bumpy. (5) After calculating the correlation coefficients between sensory value and physical properties, the tactile sensations predicted by physical properties correlated with physical adjectives. That is, the characteristics of the grain affected the tactile sensations of the leather cover. Evaluating the tactile sensations of leather car seat covers was based on active tactual motion. Therefore, evaluation by tracing and pressing the leather covers by hand could be predicted by an objective measurement of the surface properties and compression properties of the leather covers. In summary, a basic method for an objective leather car seat design is proposed.
