A GIS-based methodology to delineate risk areas for contamination of groundwater resources is presented by identifying recharge conditions to the aquifer. Identifying the recharge areas is based upon surface and subsurface geologic conditions that may control the risk of potential oil spill contaminants into the aquifer. This study uses the Chicot aquifer system in southwest Louisiana as a pilot study area. The state geologic map, available borehole geophysical logs, water well drillers logs, soil map on or near the surface (SSURGO), land use/land cover data and recent light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data are investigated and found to be useful to delineate aquifer recharge areas. The study investigated geologic information regarding pipeline protection in the region. The geologic information includes soil type, fault zones, seismic impact zones, and unstable areas, etc. The output map can be used as a guideline to render oil and gas infrastructure permission and pipeline activities.
